We had our first snowfall of the year in Louisville last week. Yes, winter is here. And for this summer lake girl, sometimes it’s hard to embrace the freezing wind that makes your bones hurt. I won’t pretend that winter and I will ever become BFFs, but here are a few ways to make peace with it and find joy during these cold months.
1 – Christmas of course! With the start of winter, we can find joy in the beauty of twinkling lights, joyous music, gift-giving, children’s laughter and spending time with loved ones.
2 – Warm, comfort food! Anyone that knows me, knows I’m a big foodie. Cooking a stew on a hot summer day just doesn’t feel the same as on a cold winter night. Comfort food just tastes better when you need to feel warm and cozy.
3 – Treat yourself to a few little luxuries! “Stuff” doesn’t make you happier. But treating yourself to a new pair of gloves, scarf or warm pajamas can definitely warm your body and soul.
4 – Be prepared and be flexible! Winter months can be unpredictable. You never know when snowfall or an ice storm is going to be bigger than the meteorologist predicted. Keep extra essentials on hand like distilled water, nonperishable food, sidewalk salt and even toilet paper (if you can find it LOL!). Here’s a list of great winter stockpile items.
I know I won’t be able to convince all of my friends and family to sit outside with me in January to catch up around a small fire over some mulled wine, down blankets, and little white lights. But I’m hoping to convince enough of them to take some of the edge off of the social isolation.
Stay warm and stay merry!
